James Cox Interview

Whats on tap? Cuppa Tea
What yer listening to? Nelly Furtado-Maneater

This morning I asked James Cox a few questions about his media life, with some others to spice it up, take it as you will.

James, you have been an intergral part of the British scene for a few years now and decided to take the plunge into doing bmx fulltime, what are your duties?
I film and edit BMX videos, predominantly for 4Down and the companies that 4Down distribute, plus a little web based stuff. I'm also in charge of everything creative at Attila Bikes, ie websites, print ads, product graphics, packaging, all that kind of stuff.
How do you find it working along side Cleggy, I bet it's fantastic and I can imagine the pay to be rather handsome? (just like cleggy i suppose hehe)
yeah it's great, he's one of the most organised and proactive guys in the business, and on top of that he pays me a hero's wage
How do you feel about people on the internet, who clearly don't have a clue about the technical aspect of filming and producing video's, nit picking your work and on ocation basicly tearing it apart?
It's a tough one, I sometimes find it hard not to take that sort of thing pretty personally, but you've got to try and rise above it in some respects. I mean I'm always open to constructive critisism, but if it's completely mindless it can get pretty frustrating - especially when you've put weeks of hard work into it.
I suppose there's one or two people who may have a clue about that sort of stuff, but to be fair the majority don't!
yeah exactly, but I've found that your average seasoned BMX filmer doesn't hang around on a forum tearing everything apart. Usually due to a higher level of general intelligence. It's always good to hear what people have to say about your work, but there's an awful lot of negativity floating around that does nothing but demotivate both the riders and the filmers out there trying to do something productive.
Anyway before you start losing your rag, just to clarify a quote you said, some of the readers may not have had the chance to visit the Odessa footwear website, can you just tell us who you are talking about when you said, and I quote "He’s arguably the owner of the best hop invert in the business"
I can't beleive you brought up the 'O' word just to crowbar your inverts in
haha, you have started a new project called big90 productions, whats going on there?
well it's nothing really, I'm just one of those people who always needs to be doing something, so I just came up with it! The idea was to make a little community of people in BMX who have creative hobbies outside of it, such as designers, filmers, photographers, that kind of thing. Eventually I want to put a site up somewhere where people can log in and just showcase their work to other creative people within a positive environment
Out of all your best mates, not including James Newrick, who is the best flatbank rider you have ever filmed? (and he has to be tall, not Josh Bedford)
Farren
Not farren
well i guess you then
ohh cheers, wasn't expecting that!!!
haha, hey it's cool, i don't go in for this whole bigtime stuff anyway, but it's nice that you have the utmost respect for my, inovitive, progressive, stylish, and confident riding style, but like I say what ever.
Im glad we agree on that
Moving swiftly on, hows the Retribution 3 video shaping up?
Its looking good, It's not going to change the world or anything, but it's good a good feel to it, and it's a pretty accurate representation of what we've all been up to for the last two years. There's still a fair amount of filming to be done, but as with all the Retribution stuff, it's really fun to do in my spare time
Whats on the cards next year travel wise, any plans?
I've got a lot on for the next few months, I'm all over the place, round this country, Europe and even further afield. I'm looking forward to it
Sweet that should just about rap it up, I know your going to want to thank a few people, while we are here.. Just keep my thanks to a minimum, we only have a certain amount of space per page to fill.
haha
If you want to just thank me, you could use my name as a sort of umberalla thanks, so thank me Cleggy, and everyone else can just sort of fall under it. It's upto you, your call.. but as an idea, it could be easier
The Retribution boys, 4Down, S&M, everyone who's put me up for the night whilst I'm travelling. cheers.
cleggy for being such a huge inspiration
easy, you'l embarrass me!
